Potty Training?

Here are a few new releases I got from Andrea Blain that readers might be interested in if potty training is new and a bit frightening. Training a child today is harder than it was years ago because of disposable diapers. When children were wet, they cried, and consequently trained about a year earlier. Now they don't care and getting them to use the toilet is a lot harder.

Potty Training DVDs Make Potty Training Fun!

Parents have at their disposal a variety of tools and aids to make toilet training more effortless for them and more entertaining for the tots. Three informational and fun DVDs are: “No More Diapers,” “Potty Power,” and “I Can Go Potty!,”

The animated “No More Diapers," from ConsumerVision, introduces viewers to Glenn, an adorable little bear who loves his diapers, but gets inspired by a friend’s potty training success and decides that he wants big boy underpants of his own.

The DVD is packaged with colorful potty-training reward stickers for use with the potty training chart available for free download at the website. Also available from the website is the “No More Diapers” potty-training diploma, which can be personalized for the diaper graduate. “No More Diapers,” 30 minutes, ($12.98).

“Potty Power,” produced by Thinkeroo, teaches children potty training in an engaging musical format. The DVD breaks down the process of potty training into a series of actions through upbeat songs and fun visuals teaching toddlers what to do. For parents, the “Helpful Hints on Potty Training” offers answers to important frequently asked questions. “Potty Power,” 30 minutes, ($14.95)

“I Can Go Potty!,” from Big Kids, introduces viewers to six-year-old Jillian who tells the humorous tale of how her little brother Andrew learned to use the potty. Produced with assistance from Dr. Barbra Ziogas, assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Connecticut Health Center and Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, “I Can Go Potty!” is chock-full of amusing insights from the child’s point-of-view and a includes step-by-step potty training tutorial. “I Can Go Potty!,” 30 minutes, ($14.95).

There are many studies about what is the appropriate age to begin potty training. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, “Children younger than 12 months have no control over bladder or bowel movements and little control for 6 months or so after that. Between 18 and 24 months, children often start to show signs of being ready, but some children may not be ready until 30 months or older.”
