The Garden School Tattler

It's been a great weekend - gloom and doom today - but it's cozy and could be a great family day indoors with lots of kiddie cuddling and hot soup and homemade bread. Speaking of homemade bread!

We've been working on a bread the kids like. One bread is a snap to make and can be made in an hour and baked in another. Here are the directions:

2 tablespoons dry yeast
2 cups warm water
1/4 cup canola oil
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp salt
5-6 cups flour

The dough can be made without waiting. Just mix it all together and let it rise in a warm spot. I preheat my oven to 170 and put the rising bread in for five minutes and then I take it out of the oven and let it rise for about 1/2 an hour.

When the bread is about twice the size as you started with, either cut the dough with a knife into chunks and place in a pie or cake pan and bake, or roll into a loaf and put into a loaf pan. Let rise for another 1/2 hour and bake at 350 for another 1/2 hour until the top is slightly brown and rapping on the loaf sounds hollow.
