Day Care Centre Cherishes Children
Wednesday, May 03, 2006

A DAY care centre in Lautoka celebrated Children's Day by having children dress up in their traditional costumes and entertaining the teachers with items.

Prasad's Day Care Centre owner Savita Prasad said the half-day celebrations were in keeping with the event theme, 'Keeping our children connected to family, community and culture.'

"We thought to do something after I read in The Fiji Times on April 7 about it and also because Lautoka was not doing anything," Mrs Prasad said.

"Teachers made paper costumes for the children to wear for the 15 items they performed.
"The teachers also performed two items for the children.

"We also had organised games for the children like bun-eating competition, sack race, book-on-head but because it was rainy this morning we did more indoor activities."

Mrs Prasad said it was the second time the centre celebrated the occasion because she believed it was important.

"Children are achievements of the future and if a day is given to them, it makes them feel important and helps in their confidence building," she said.

"This way we build their self-worth and self-esteem and they know they are loved by the community."

She said children from two-and-a-half to five years of age took part in the celebrations.
