The Garden School Tattler

Kaito returned home from Japan today and came for a visit. The kids were thrilled to see him. He brought gifts of food for the children and wonderful cookies for the teachers.

The children were inspired with our study of Geography today with the addition of tiny ship model replicas they earn by knowing a place. The ship model has their name and it is pinned onto the map. We picked out Tasmania (Austin) Madagascar (Justin) Egypt (Hadley) and the Arctic Ocean (Adyson).

We sang a Miss Molly Song - There Were Three Jolly Fishermen. The kids loved it.

At home we've been discussing how "flat" the earth is with the burgeoning of technology throughout the third world countries. Lots of your food orders at fast food restaurants are relayed to India as you place an order and by the time your food is delivered at the pick up window, much of the transaction has been done thousands of miles away.

Many questions about all kinds of accounts are often handled in India. Medical transcripts as well are faxed over seas and re-faxed by the next morning to your doctor's desk.

Today I picked up a Japanese medicine, made in Ireland, with Chinese packaging.

At the same time, there are still primitive cultures existing along side us - like the Tree People. We talked about the Tree People today. They still use the South Sea island custom of punishing bad people by ingesting them. Interesting fact among computers, fast food, and medical transcripts.

We live in such a wonderful interesting world. The kids are knee deep in discovery about that world, and they have developed a fantastic vocabulary to ask the most wonderful questions.

Tomorrow we will sit down at tables and look at pictures of the world in books we have collected at school. The Material World is an excellent source, and better still are the Lonely Planet people books. Mrs. St. Louis's son, Regis, writes these books.

My class struggled through the bingo sheet. Most of the children followed the directions and did very well. I was surprised. We will continue to work on this kind of thing.

Today we had roast pork - very delicious - kids loved it. We had watermelon, oranges, noodles, bread and butter, milk, and cottage cheese.

Tomorrow, it's chocolate chip muffins for breakfast.
